OPAL

At St Peter’s CofE Primary Academy Mansfield, we believe that loving, living, and learning with Jesus extends beyond the classroom walls. Our commitment to nurturing the whole child is reflected in our approach to play and learning through the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme. As a Church of England primary academy with large grounds, we are uniquely placed to offer enriching outdoor experiences that support our pupils’ development from Nursery through Year 6.

What is OPAL?

OPAL stands for Outdoor Play and Learning. It is an approach that encourages children to explore, discover, and learn through play in the natural environment. OPAL transforms our playground and outdoor spaces into vibrant, stimulating areas where children can be active, imaginative, and collaborative.

This approach is especially important at St Peter’s, where we support a diverse community, including pupils who receive Pupil Premium, who speak English as an additional language, and pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). OPAL allows every child to engage in play that is inclusive, accessible, and tailored to their interests and needs.

Benefits for Children

Outdoor play through OPAL offers many benefits that align closely with our school vision and values:

  • Physical health and well-being: Children develop strength, coordination, and fitness while enjoying fresh air and exercise.
  • Emotional resilience: Time outside encourages risk-taking in a safe environment, helping children build confidence and independence.
  • Social skills: Collaborative play nurtures teamwork, communication, and empathy—qualities that reflect our Christian values.
  • Creativity and curiosity: The natural environment inspires imagination and problem-solving, allowing children to develop critical thinking skills.
  • Connection with nature and spirituality: Outdoor learning deepens children’s appreciation for God’s creation, fostering a sense of stewardship and respect for the world around them.

What You Need to Know as a Parent

To fully benefit from OPAL, children need to be prepared to play outdoors in all weathers. We ask that every pupil brings:

  • Wellies (wellington boots) – to keep their feet dry and comfortable. These should be kept in school.
  • A waterproof coat – to protect from rain and wind, ensuring they can enjoy outdoor play regardless of weather conditions.
  • Waterproof trousers (optional) - to keep their school trousers dry and mud-free as children will be out enjoying play in all weather.

These items help children stay warm and dry, enabling them to engage fully in OPAL activities safely and happily.

Embracing Our Vision Through Outdoor Learning

At St Peter’s, loving, living, and learning with Jesus is not just a phrase but a lived experience. Through OPAL, we create a nurturing environment where children love to learn, live actively, and grow spiritually. Our outdoor spaces become classrooms without walls, where pupils develop holistically and where every child’s unique gifts are celebrated.

Join Us in Supporting Outdoor Play

We encourage parents and carers to support our OPAL programme by ensuring children come to school ready for outdoor adventures. Together, we can help our pupils flourish in body, mind, and spirit, living out the values that make St Peter’s a special place to learn and grow.
